Screw Subtlety

I'm not known for subtlety...never have been. When I was in high school (back in the dark ages) I was the head of a large club of girls; I was usually yelling at them to get off their duffs and get work done and my mother would always say, “You shouldn’t yell so much. You should be nice to everyone. You’ll catch more flies with honey than with vinegar, you know.” My response to that was always, “Mom, I don’t wanna catch any damn flies!” Nope, not a subtle bone in this body. You’ve been warned....

The best laid plans....

Mapping out one’s life, while a laudable goal, is not in the least necessary nor it is very wise. For as soon as you start planning and mapping, something will inevitably happen to cause a detour. Perhaps that fork in the road you didn’t anticipate will lead to something bright and new for you, and if you adhere too closely to the map you’ll miss it.

Where some may see obstacles in the road, it would be wise, little ones, to see opportunities. Sometimes the opportunities are not at all what you were expecting, but they may lead to journeys so wondrous you will never regret the detour. Be open to tossing the map out the window. Maps are a good starting point and they can come in handy when you do lose your way, but sometimes the unmapped route will lead you to precious treasures and adventures.

Don’t plan too much...always keep in mind it’s not the destination, it’s the journey. Be open to the journeys, for that is where you will learn and live life to the fullest...on the journeys. We all ultimately reach the same destination at the end of our lives on this earth. But oh the many and varied journeys we take to get there.

May all your journeys be filled with adventures and challenges, and may you all lose the maps now and again....

No, it’s not the end of the world…but it can be the beginning....

Sometimes, when you are totally knocked for a loop by news you thought you never wanted to hear, it’s wise to stop...take a deep breath...drop every expectation or preconceived notion you have...and just go with it. Step blindly into the abyss, arms open wide, face to the sun....

I guess it’s a matter of faith (and this is coming from one of most unreligious, though spiritual, souls around). Have faith that whatever is to be will be, and just go with it. Have faith that the best is yet to come. Have faith that you and all the loved ones in your life can tackle ANYTHING together. Have faith that this indeed is not the end of the world, but the beginning of a whole new world. Have faith, little ones, have faith....

Maybe it's your turn to learn....

"Didn’t you learn anything?" "Don’t you know any better?" "We thought we taught you better!" "You should have known this would happen!" "How could you let this happen?!" ...all phrases a parent has said to a child since the beginning of time. But just this once stop for a moment and think...perhaps the one that needs to learn is you. Perhaps, just perhaps, this lesson is for you to learn, dear parent. So sit up straight, pay attention, open your mind and your heart, and learn....
